Coach-in-the-Spotlight: Beverley Powell

Leadership & Inclusion Coach

Beverley Powell is a  national  award  winning leadership and Inclusion Coach and one of the top 50 National Black Minority Ethnic pioneers for her work around Inclusion.

Beverley is self-driven and inspirational woman who has made an impact on those fortunate enough to be associated with her throughout her career. From her humble beginnings, Beverley has taken on many challenges seizing opportunities.

Beverley’s Jamaican parents arrived in Bolton in the 1950’s, where she grew up to the backdrop of open racism, discrimination and a perception by those in power that she was unlikely to be successful in the future. Little did they know!

Beverley’s early career was with the Greater Manchester Police where, by choice as part of her career progression, she worked in a variety of police departments, where along with other police  colleagues tackled institutional racism and discrimination. This was where she had her first experience of being coached and its profound impact on her own personal development and future growth. Beverley was heavily involved in helping to support the organisation readdress the imbalance that was found in the police service, and work with the wider organisation in changing culture and attitudes to create fresh values.

Beverley is motivated by challenging negative perceptions. When told something is not possible, Beverley has repeatedly acheived considerable success particularly  at challenging stereotypes and transforming the attitudes and prevailing cultures within organsiations. She has vast experience and understanding of working with VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) within the Police force, H.M. Prison service, and N.H.S. services. It was whilst Beverley was at teacher training school in 2004 that Beverley decided to take her coaching to the next level and study and achieve a national qualification as a Life Coach.

‘Seeing a clients potential to grow, and being part of that process, enabling a client to grow and blossom is truly rewarding’ is how Beverley best describes her greatest joy with the surprises she reaps from her coaching. She likens this process as having a rose, nurturing it to gently open and bloom into full glory after it is put in water and given food, meaning through support through  coaching sessions, the client reaches their ful potential.

The advice Beverley would give to someone considering a career in coaching is to have a love of lifelong learning. Be an advocate for continually working on yourself, knowing yourself, and identifying what motivates you should never stop. Within the ‘services section’ of her website, Beverley has a section on ‘How Coachable Am I?’ This is something a future coach may wish to look at and reflect upon too!

What has Dr. Martin Luther King, Nina Simone, Maya Angelou and Mary Seacole all got in common? They would be the guests invited to sit alongside Beverley with her friends and family at a dinner party. One can only begin to imagine the sensational conversations and debate that would take place.

Beverley particularly focuses on Inclusion and Talent in her coaching practice as a lever to empower clients to achieve their potential. Her coaching techniques include elements of traditional coaching and Orgainsational Development particularly methods introduced by Mee Yan Cheung Judge.

As the Poet Maya Angelou said: “I believe that every person is born with talent.”
