Coach-in-the-Spotlight: David McCormick
Motivational Coach, Mentor & Trainer

David McCormick has a great love of both Coaching and Training. When focusing on and enjoying every moment of one aspect (say Coaching), momentum and excitement is building for the other (Training). David was ordained at the age of twenty-four with the Church of England at Lincoln Cathedral. He has always had a genuine interest and love in releasing the full potential within people which has formed the backdrop of what he has done, hand in hand with his spirituality. David’s role in the church naturally progressed over time from being a parish priest, leading retreats and reflection, to becoming a Theological Educator and the Principal of Lincoln Ministry - overseeing the development and progression of ministry training courses and academic programmes.
His interactive style when dealing with people has always been one of ‘inspiring others’ as opposed to ‘directing them’. Over the years, David has worked with a wide range of people, both employees and volunteers. As a Spiritual Director, Chaplain and Reflective Practice lead he has worked with people in palliative care and continues to support the local MacMillian Team. It was whilst he was looking at professional development available within his Ministry that he discovered the two-day ‘Coaching Academy’ and was ‘blown away’ by the vast benefits it could offer the Church.
David has an unquenchable thirst for learning be it NLP, DISC, TKI or Coaching. His favourite book within the Three Shires shared resource library is The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle. David has a fondness for this book as it is an powerful reminder that we need to be present and live in the moment. From reading this, it has enhanced his delivery and understanding of what to do as Coach and just how much spirituality is a large part of Coaching.
‘The bar to be a successful coach is high!’ This is the poignant message David would give to anyone considering a career in Coaching. For those thinking of changing career to Coaching he advises ‘Don’t give up the day job until you can’t fit it in around your coaching!’
David’s specialist areas are Conflict, Communication and Change (the three C’s). In his experience these are primarily the areas that cause the most issues in people’s lives. His Coaching style over time allows his clients to set the agenda whilst he manages the process. It never cases to amaze David how coaching questions can open up a wealth of possibilities for his clients. His selection and application of these allows his clients to take ownership of their own self-awareness during the process.
What many colleagues may not know about David, is some priceless moments from his acting career! Two stories shared were as an Ugly Sister at his sixth form Christmas ball and the role of Jesus in a Medieval Mystery play whilst he was a young Priest. His youth group attended the final performance, after which one of the youth group said, ‘You look better with your clothes on!’ Despite his love of performing and leading training, David considers himself as an introvert. He characterises this extremely well via a ‘Venetian Mask’ – handling the invisible personas we wear at different times for different audiences as posted on his Facebook page.
Despite having a love of visiting Italy, particularly for the food and drink, David would choose New England in America as a destination if he was to win a holiday anywhere in the world. His partner and himself would especially like to visit this place in the Autumn Fall to witness the magnificent colours and landscapes of tranquillity!
