Coach-in-the-Spotlight: Gareth Clark
People Coach

Gareth Clarks’ interests and work lie in supporting people who are serving or have served a Custodial Sentence. Coaching has developed naturally for Gareth throughout his career and commenced when he first attended an internal Coaching course. This was something his employers wanted to embed across the workforce. He also attended two Coaching courses led by Debbie Inglis which he found invaluable.
Gareth has seen the impact and difference Coaching can make. He worked in a custodial setting for fourteen years with ten years as a Career Adviser for those in custody. What he observed was although he provided a plethora of valued advice and information, it was then not being followed through by the inmates. This puzzled him and it wasn’t until he come across coaching and seeing the potential for influencing a person actions that he adapted his career practice and brought coaching techniques into his careers work. This was something they needed, as it accepted the past but enabled the inmates to focus on their future career goals. Coaching unlocked the door, not only for him in his work but it supported inmates in making decisions, thus enabling inmates to move forward with greater empowerment.
Gareth quite rightly describes himself as an enabler. Working alongside those in difficult positions and enabling them to have more confidence in themselves and become forward thinking is what Gareth enjoys the most from his job. He has found frequently that inmates worry about other people’s and society’s perceptions of them. They need to start feeling that they are believed in and develop the confidence and belief in themselves.
Gareth first joined The 3 Shires Coaching group over two years ago for personal development and continues to enjoy being part of the group, learning new skills and information to reflect upon after every meeting. To describe the group to others who have not attended before Gareth would say the highlight of attending this group is the opportunity to actively listen to the other Coaches who are always positive people, contribute and pick up great new ideas. Activities covered within each of the meetings cover a broad range of topics but are all centred around Coaching. The group meets in Barlborough in Chesterfield near Junction 30 of the M1.
Gareth would describe himself as a non-judgmental person who emphasises the importance of living in the ‘now’ whilst always keeping one eye on the future. He loves quotes. Three which really capture his philosophy well are:
“We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” Ronald Reagan
“Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear.” George Addair
"If you live in the moment, you’ll live a life.” Gareth Clark
If Gareth had the opportunity to ask anybody in the world a question he would choose Nelson Mandela. He would like to know how he managed to survive mentally being locked up for all that time and still managing to have a sense of forgiveness.
Arisaig and the Scottish Islands are special to Gareth and a place he would choose to go to if he won a week’s holiday. Reasons for this include the exceptional sunsets, breathtaking views and sense of freedom - feeling a million miles away from everything.
