Coach-in-the-Spotlight: Jaime Beckett

Executive Coach & Mentor
Jaime promotes a focus not on work-life balance but on life lived irrespective of whether during work or not. His early career as a Design Engineer progressed to Project Manager then Business Change Consultant. It was during his time as a consultant that he engaged a personal coach who had a great impact on him. Receiving coaching opened his eyes to the range possibilities and new perspectives for transforming both himself and his clients. Jaime was inspired to better understand more about how successful coaches are able to help clients find the solutions that work best for themselves. This was in stark contrast to the professional consultant acting as ‘expert’ and imparting words of wisdom for the client to follow. The transformative power of helping people find their own ‘right way’ provided the motivation for him to complete an ILM diploma in executive coaching and mentoring.

Outside of work, Jaime has a wide variety of people who have influenced his life from different creative backgrounds. Growing up listening to David Bowie was one such influence that captured the essence of continuous reinvention and creation that refused to accept the linear defined roles that many people fall into. As an avid reader, Jaime has favourite books that he regularly revisits. Writers like Yuval Noah Harari (Sapiens and Home Deus) provide analytical science based hope for better futures for humankind and the writing of mindful teachers such as Bhante Heneopla Gunaratana prompt thoughtful reflection. In their different ways both support an open minded approach to coaching a diverse range of clients. One specific coaching related inspiration of Jaime’s is from the works of Nancy Kline. Her book ‘Time to Think’ captured the power of effective coaching in creating safe spaces for the client to do the thinking and find optimum solutions that work for them rather than the coach.
Ellen McArthur is a local inspiration for Jaime with her nautical achievements racing solo around the world. For exhilarating relaxation Jaime sails at his local club on Carsington Water where he loves to race his 18-foot catamaran. Mid-week races at the club are a regular commitment he makes which, depending on the weather, can be very relaxing or extremely exhilarating.
Advice Jaime would give to people considering a career in coaching is that there is no substitute for a formal training course. This is not only to learn the skills, techniques and application, but to use the opportunity to continue to develop yourself. Having an experienced coach act as your critical friend provides a wonderful opportunity for self learning and insight.
For Jaime, coming away from a coaching session with a feeling that he has made a real difference and left his client in a better place than they would have been otherwise is both extremely powerful and satisfying.
The transition from dispensing wisdom to one of assisting and enabling has helped him create opportunities and possibilities for many clients. The deep realisation that this has brought has been transformational for Jaime, which he summed up well with the simple phrase:
‘Anything you can tell, you can ask’.
