Coach-in-the-Spotlight: Rebecca Norton
Picture

Life Coach, Trainer & NLP Practitioner

Rebecca is a life coach with a passion for the outdoors and walking, which she has successfully integrated into her own business, Sense of Direction. It is whilst walking that she has some of her greatest ideas and it was where she decided this would also be a huge benefit to some of her clients. This extends and compliments her wider work, as she holds a U.K. Mountain Leader qualification and a lifelong love of Girl Guiding.

Nepal of all places is a prodigious example of this, which Rebecca has visited twice: once volunteering for ‘Action Aid’ building community houses and then trekking with Girl Guiding members up to 3,500 feet for a once in a lifetime experience and for the spectacular views.

Her character has been described variously as ‘Yorkshire Grit,’ a ‘Lady of many talents’ and a ‘Cheerleader.’ Rebecca was born and bred in Yorkshire and is proud to be associated with it. The county has beautiful countryside to walk in and she describes many of its people as being down to earth, with a strong resilience and determination to make things work.

During her training and as a Coach, perhaps one of the most surprising things for Rebecca has been just how much more you discover about yourself and develop as a person. Secondly, it is some people’s  misconception that a coach gives advice, when in fact it is the skills of observing, listening and feeding back that come into play.

Rebecca has a real sense of satisfaction from working with clients and witnessing the transformation they go through. She finds enabling someone to dig deep into their own values, what they mean to them and why, are really important to be established before moving forward.

Rebecca finds getting to know a client, having them place their trust in her is a real privilege.

Successful people employ a Coach – it isn’t a sign of weakness, it is an investment in yourself. For this to be truly effective Rebecca’s advice to new coaches is to make sure there is the ‘right fit’ between the Coach and the Client. Many of Rebecca’s clients are undergoing a period of significant change in their lives such as their career, redundancy, divorce, or retirement. These Clients need to feel comfortable to disclose and talk as part of their personal journey and transition. Many need help in motivating themselves to become more confident and to start moving forward with their lives with a sense of purpose.

In addition to her one-to-one work, Rebecca uses the outdoor environment to coach small groups whilst walking. During the Clarity in Motion session she will stop the group and impart coaching strategies. Each individual responds by writing down their own deep feelings and thoughts. This process is repeated throughout the walk. At the end of the walk Rebecca then helps them to develop their private notes into an action plan to implement moving forward. Not only does everyone have a heightened sense of well-being from being outdoors and walking in the Countryside, but a sense of both reflection and clarity on how to now move forward.

Two destinations Rebecca would love to visit are the Highlands and Islands in Scotland for the stunning views and tranquility. As for our wider world it would be Japan again for the beautiful scenery but also to learn about their culture and beliefs.

"I'm always learning and developing, I'm adaptable and not afraid of challenge."
